Gahanna Lincoln 2015 quick preview

Gahanna Lincoln Preview

Gahanna Lincoln Lions

2014 record: 7-4 (6-1)

Fans of Gahanna Lincoln’s football team felt a wide array of emotions in 2014. From severe lows to start their season to riding high on a seven-game winning streak and all the way back down to back-to-back losses to Pickerington Central, the Lions had quite the season.

Lincoln kicked the 2014 season off with a tough out-of-conference match up against eventual State Runner-Up, Huber Heights Wayne. They then dropped a close contest throughout to nearby rival Westerville South.

The losing ended there however, as the Lions tore off seven consecutive victories, all against fellow Ohio Capital Conference teams. Included in those seven victories were impressive wins – 45-0 over Newark and 41-14 over Upper Arlington – and close fought battles – 10-0 over Grove City and 27-24 over Pickerington North.

The seven-game winning streak would come to an abrupt end however when Gahanna Lincoln hosted Pickerington Central.

Central, winners of nine straight, came to town holding opponents to under nine points per game. That would hold true in both of their eventual meetings as the Tigers jumped out to an early lead and knocked off the Lions in the regular season finale, 34-6.

After the loss, Gahanna Lincoln would learn of their playoff fate – a match up against Pickerington Central, this time in Tiger territory.

Unlike their first meeting however, the playoff match up would come down to the wire.

With not much offense from either side during a defensive struggle, it was Pickerington Central’s Noah Burk that found the end zone for the game’s lone points with 0:57 seconds remaining. Burk’s touchdown gave the Tigers a 7-0 victory over the Lions, thus ending their season on a sour note.

In 2015, Gahanna Lincoln returns several key players from a 7-4 season a year ago. Quarterback Mason Blancett anchors a backfield that will have to replace, now graduated Vasean Davis.

Blancett threw for 1,110 yards and nine touchdowns while he also rushed for 146 yards and two more scores.

Davis led all Lions with his 968 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 2014 while rising senior Derek Marcum looks to fill the void left by Davis. Marcus ran the ball 80 times for 365 yards and two touchdowns in 2014.

Leading the receiving corps will be rising seniors Elijah Whiteside and Jacob Chobany. Whiteside finished the 2014 season with 19 receptions for 207 yards while Chobany hauled in 10 receptions for 90 yards. They will each have their turn at filling the role left by the graduation of Jenisys Battle who led the team in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and return yards.

On defense, the Lions return their leading tackler from 2014 in Jonathon Cooper. Cael Baker and Nathaniel Russell should anchor a Lions secondary that hauled in 11 interceptions a season ago.

With Blancett leading the offense and several other starters returning on both sides of the ball, the Lions will be itching to get back to the field this fall after the way their 2014 campaign ended.

While each of the nine games beforehand will be equally important to Head Coach Bruce Ward, you can bet he and his players will be eagerly anticipating their October 29th tilt against Pickerington Central.

Gahanna Lincoln kicks off their 2015 season at Westerville Central on Friday, August 28 at 7:30.

Olentangy Liberty 2015 quick preview

Olentangy Liberty 2015 preview

Olentangy Liberty Patriots

2014 record: 9-3 (6-1)

Fans of Olentangy Liberty were treated to a rather remarkable season in 2014. After cruising past one in-town rival, Olentangy Orange, the Patriots provided arguably one of the season’s most exciting games when they took on their other in-town rival, Olentangy.

The Patriots and Braves took part in a true back-and-forth matchup. While Liberty put the first 14 points on the board, Olentangy scored 21 unanswered, taking their first lead of the game just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Patriots re-tied the game with an Alex Lando pass to Jacob Wiseman shortly after the Braves had taken a lead of their own. Both teams were not done scoring however.

Not by a long shot.

After an Anthony Golden 20-yard touchdown for Olentangy, Liberty’s Lando found Wiseman again, this time for 42 yards, tying the game once more with just 1:10 left in the fourth quarter. Regulation would end with both teams knotted at 28.

The Braves kicked off overtime with possession of the ball but would subsequently throw two straight incompletions forcing a difficult 3rd and 10 situation. Action resumed after a quick time out, and Olentangy quarterback Deeb Haber hit Drew Batt from 20 yards out to put the first points of the overtime on the board.

Trailing 35-28 but with possession on their side of the field, the Patriots took to the air on their first play of the extra period. Lando found senior running back Nicholas Durtschi for 10 yards. Add on a defensive personal foul and Liberty would be set up with a 1st and goal from the 5-yard line.

Lando again found Wiseman for six, seemingly extending the game to another overtime period as the Patriots were just an extra point away from tying the game yet again.

That’s where things got even more exciting for fans. Liberty Head Coach Steve Hale opted to – instead of kicking the extra point – go for the win and left his offense on the field in an attempt to convert a 2-point attempt. However, despite their best effort, the Liberty faithful would not be allowed to erupt in joy as Lando’s pass fell incomplete to Wiseman in the end zone and the Braves held on to defeat their rivals, 35-34.

Even with their bruising early season loss to Olentangy, the Patriots ripped off six consecutive wins, outscoring those opponents by a combined margin of 166-54. Included in those were two shutout victories, one over Westland, 35-0 and another over Hilliard Davidson, 21-0.

Sitting at 7-1, Liberty squared off against perennial powerhouse Dublin Coffman in a late season matchup that would help Coffman secure their fate as regular season Ohio Capital Conference champions. The Shamrocks were too much, too late for the Patriots, defeating Liberty 52-24.

Not to be deterred however, the Patriots ended their season by cruising past Thomas Worthington and set up for a first round home playoff game against Toledo’s Whitmer High School.

Liberty defeated the Panthers, 49-21, to set a date with St. Edward. The eventual State Champions would be too much for the Patriots, ending their outstanding season shorter than they would have liked.

In 2014, Olentangy Liberty was paced by quarterback Alex Lando. The rising senior threw for 2,045 yards, completing 191-of-280 passes for 22 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 75 times for 152 yards and another four touchdowns.

Wiseman finished the season as Lando’s favorite target – accumulating 59 receptions for 641 yards and nine TDs. In all, Lando found seven players for double-digit receptions.

Durtschi led the Patriot backfield, rushing 231 times for 1,254 yards and 12 touchdowns while Wiseman also accrued 392 yards on the ground and an additional eight scores. Durtschi led all Patriot players with his 2,056 total yards in 2014.

In 2015 however, someone else will have to lead the way for the Patriots offensive attack as both Wiseman and Durtschi have since graduated.

Another big loss for the Patriots in 2015 is offensive lineman Hunter Littlejohn, who will be playing for Indiana University next fall. Littlejohn stood at 6-foot-4 and weighed in at over 270 pounds during his senior season for the Patriots and blocked his way to a nod on the AP All-Ohio Second Team in 2014.

With Lando returning under center, the Patriots will have the assurance of a senior signal-caller to help guide their new look offense in 2015.

Rising senior Torre Bower returns as the team’s leading rusher aside from Lando a year ago. Bower ran for just 53 yards during his junior season. The receiving corps will be bolstered by a duo of rising juniors in Andrew Rosi and Brendon White.

While they each finished their sophomore seasons with 21 receptions, Rosi led the two with 305 yards while White led with his five receiving touchdowns.

The Patriots, led by Lando, will kick off their 2015 season taking on both of their in-town rivals in back-to-back games once again. Liberty begins their campaign against Olentangy Orange on Friday, August 28 at 7:30.

Hilliard Bradley 2015 quick preview

Hilliard Bradley 2015 preview

Hilliard Bradley Jaguars

2014 record: 5-5 (3-4)

The Hilliard Bradley Jaguars had a season of ups and downs in 2014. The Jaguars jumped out to a quick 3-1 record after victories over Thomas Worthington, Reynoldsburg and Dublin Jerome before faltering against Westerville South and Westerville Central.

Bradley continued their season of flux by winning two more games (against Canal Winchester and Westerville North) before dropping close contests in their final two games of the season. The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead over Dublin Scioto before ultimately falling 13-7 while they closed the gap to 21-14 against in-town rival Hilliard Darby before surrendering a 27-14 defeat.

All of the ups and all of the downs eventually led Hilliard Bradley to a 5-5 record in 2014.

The Jaguars were paced by senior running back Jordan Haywood who carried the ball for 1,163 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Haywood’s departure leaves a large hole in the backfield for Bradley. Additionally, the Jaguars also lost Trey Anderson (503), Kenny Sanford (253), Patrick Enright (121) and Jamil Jones (55) – all who ranked second, fourth, fifth and sixth in terms of rushing yards last season, respectively.

The combination of rising senior Chris Wall and rising juniors David Nguyen and Jacob Reitz return as the only running backs to accumulate yards a season ago.

Despite the losses in the backfield, Bradley does return their rising senior quarterback Chance Levitt. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder saw success in the rushing attack himself rushing for 376 yards yards while throwing scarcely in 2014.

On the defensive side of things for Bradley, graduation again takes its toll on the team from last season. Among those losses are Demias Heard and Dalton Hatfield who topped the team in interceptions.

With the return of their signal-caller from a season ago, the 2015 season has the makings of a similar spell like that of 2014 – up and down. After traveling to Thomas Worthington in week one, the Jaguars will host three consecutive games, starting with Middletown in week two.

After Middletown, Bradley will host Hilliard Davidson and Dublin Jerome. Three of their middle four games this season will be against the Westerville teams once again before they culminate their season at their in-town rival Darby.

Levitt will have to take control early for a Hilliard Bradley offense who will field several new players this fall on both sides of the ball. The Jaguars face Thomas Worthington on Friday, August 28 at 7:30.

Dublin Scioto 2015 quick preview

Dublin Scioto 2015 preview

Dublin Scioto Irish

2014 record: 8-5 (4-3)

Dublin Scioto will begin the 2015 season – just like they did a season ago – taking part in the Battle of Hard Road.

Unlike last season however, both teams will have new quarterbacks under center when the 2015 Battle of Hard Road takes place. While Worthington Kilbourne will be without Griffin Dahn, the Irish will be without their undisputed leader from last season – quarterback Nathan Densel.

Densel completed 214-of-353 passes last season for 2,377 yards and 11 touchdowns in leading Scioto to an 8-5 record and a berth into the State Regional Finals. He also ran the ball 158 times for 690 yards and four additional touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder spread the ball around well enough during the 2015 season, hitting seven receivers 10 or more times. He found three of those receivers for 46 or more receptions including hitting Jake Keeley 55 times to top the team. Densel found Keeley, Justin Schafer and Evan Wallace for 665, 603 and 411 yards, respectively.

In 2015, and additionally to losing Densel, the Irish also will be without the services of Schafer and Keeley as they have both graduated. Wallace and Josh Vogel will return as the team’s top receiving targets.

The backfield might have a couple familiar names in 2015, with that name being Cutchember and Densel. However, instead of the two-headed Francis/Dominick Cutchember attack that Irish fans saw a season ago – 2015 will just see the likes of Dominic.

And instead of Nathan Densel – Scioto fans will likely see more of Noah Densel this fall.

The Cutchember duo combined for 741 yards last season and nine touchdowns. With Francis graduated, Dominick returns as the team’s leading rusher. He will be joined in the backfield by Jestin Penn who totaled 296 yards and three touchdowns on the ground a season ago.

Noah threw three passes in 2014, completing one of them for three yards, yet he enters the fall camp as the team’s leading returner in pass yards.

Christian Hammond will round out the new look Irish backfield in 2015.

Arguably the biggest loss from the 2014 season is the departure of linebacker/fullback Nick Conner, who has already enrolled at Ohio State University.

Conner tallied 13 touchdowns on just 49 carries while also racking up over 50 total tackles from his middle linebacker position. Conner registered four tackles for loss, broke up three passes, an interception and forced a fumble in double duty.

The Irish defense will also be without their sack artist as Brennen Sawicki’s graduation leaves a gap at defensive tackle, quite literally. Sawicki’s 6-foot-2, 275-pound frame will no longer clog the holes for a Scioto defense that forced 23 turnovers in 2014.

While Scioto may have to replace big holes both on the defensive line and in the linebacking corps – one thing is for certain: the Irish secondary may be one of the better groups on the field on any given Friday night in central Ohio.

Returning to anchor the secondary are Jack Suich and Joe Wallace. The two combined for 143 tackles while also breaking up 10 passes. Suich brought down three interceptions while Wallace also had an INT in 2014.

Also returning is cornerback Brian Johnson who finished the 2014 season with 22 tackles, one for loss, and four pass break ups.

While the Dublin Scioto team that hits the field against Kilbourne in the Battle of Hard Road may be a much different team in 2015, albeit with familiar names, fans of the Irish will still be hoping for similar results. And hopefully a return trip to the Regional Finals of the State Playoffs in 2015.

The Irish kick their season off at home against Worthington Kilbourne on Friday, August 28 at 7:30 pm.

Dublin Jerome 2015 quick preview

Dublin Jerome 2015 preview

Dublin Jerome Celtics

2014 record: 4-6 (3-4)

Fans of the Dublin Jerome Celtics saw an interesting season in 2014, to say the least. After a disappointing, season-opening loss to Upper Arlington, Jerome treated their home fans with a thrilling 1-point victory over Division I’s Pickerington North.

The slim margin of victory (17-16) came only after the Celtics blocked Pickerington North’s game-tying extra point with just 0:44 seconds remaining in the game.

The fans elation would halt after that however, as Jerome faltered in their next three games by a combined score of 121-26. Despite falling to 1-4 at the midway point of the season, they pressed forward.

After winning yet another thrilling game via a blocked extra point (a double overtime win against Westerville North, 42-41), Jerome defeated their in-town rival Dublin Scioto, 36-31. Trailing 16-0 early in the second quarter, the Celtics outscored the Irish, 35-13 over the final 35 minutes to close out their rivals.

Jerome would subsequently defeat Canal Winchester before falling in their final two contests against Westerville South and Westerville Central to drop their record to 4-6 in 2014.

Last season, the Celtics were led by senior quarterback Alex Cline who threw for 2,315 yards, completing 193-of-354 passes and 24 touchdowns. His favorite target was wide receiver Skylar Blake who brought down 54 receptions for 579 yards – both team highs.

Senior Nate Szekely led the team with his nine receiving touchdowns and a 13.9 yard average per catch. Jerome’s ground game was led by speedy Austin Booth.

The sophomore running back ran the ball 142 times for 404 yards and five touchdowns – all were good enough for the team lead. Standing at only 5-foot-4, Booth utilized his low stature to find holes and seemingly disappear from defenders at times.

In 2015 – Booth and rising senior Blake will have to be relied upon heavily after the graduation of Cline from under center.

The only two players on the 2015 roster to have attempted a pass last season are Hunter Schell and Zach Hazlett. While Hazlett’s primary positions are wide receiver or in the secondary – Schell completed 3-of-4 passes a season ago for 19 yards.

If Schell is to be the Celtic leader heading in to this fall – it’s safe to say he will throw more than four passes in 2015.

The Celtic defense will also need to lean upon on rising seniors, in the duo of Daniel Lex and Colson Poach. Lex led Jerome in total tackles a year ago while Poach’s 31 solo tackles topped the team.

Poach also broke up 11 passes in 2014.

The linebacker duo will have to patrol the middle of a Jerome defense that loses five of its top seven tacklers from a year ago.

To start the season in 2015, Jerome’s schedule is an unforgiving one for a new starter at quarterback and host of new defenders. After hosting Upper Arlington – the Celtics won’t have a home game for the next month as they take to the road for three consecutive weeks – at Lancaster, at Olentangy Liberty and finally at Hilliard Bradley.

Dublin Jerome opens their 2015 season with a new quarterback under center against Upper Arlington on August 28, at 7:30 pm.

Dublin Coffman 2015 quick preview

Dublin Coffman quick preview

Dublin Coffman Shamrocks

2014 record: 11-1 (7-0)

To say the Dublin Coffman team that will suit up in 2015 will look different than the Dublin Coffman team that did in 2014, would be an understatement.

Aside from returning leader and University of Kentucky commit in quarterback Gunnar Hoak, the Shamrocks offense and defense will seemingly be a completely new bunch of starters come August.

Among many others, the offensive losses of running back Dre Kendrick, wide receivers Kyle Marcinick, CJ Saunders, Chase Granlund and Shaun Rankin certainly stand out. Hoak will have to find new targets as the signal-caller will have lost eight players who recorded a catch in 2014, including the team’s top five receivers who combined for 134 receptions, 2,153 yards and 27 touchdowns.

His top returning receiving target will be wide receiver Eric Bradford, who brought down 12 receptions for 119 yards a season ago.

Coffman’s second leading rusher does return in 2015, but considering the numbers that Kendrick put up in 2014, Stephen Headings will have big shoes to fill this fall. Headings totaled 153 yards on the ground on 32 carries and two touchdowns.

Kendrick on the other hand, put up 1,467 rushing yards on 218 carries and 19 touchdowns. Those numbers and the Rocks 11-1 record were good enough to place Kendrick on the All-Ohio Division I Second Team.

Griffin Grady and Isaac McKinney will anchor the Coffman defense for a second year in a row as the rising senior duo finished 1-2 in every major defensive statistical category last season.

However, behind Grady and McKinney and similar to their offensive losses, the Rocks will have graduated their next 10 in terms of total tackles accumulated in 2014.

Even with all of those losses on both sides of the ball, fans of Dublin Coffman can still be optimistic for the 2015 season for one main reason.

That reason is reigning Division I First Team All-State quarterback – Gunnar Hoak.

Hoak completed 148-of-232 passes for 2,283 yards and 26 touchdowns during his junior season. His incredible season saw one blemish, and it happened to be in the playoffs when Coffman lost a close, hard fought game against eventual State Champion runner-up, Huber Heights Wayne.

While the question marks may be plentiful as to who he will throw to, one thing is for certain in Dublin – Hoak is certainly the man to hitch your wagon to.

Coffman starts their 2015 season, looking to continue their regular season undefeated streak when they meet Springfield on August 28 at 7:30.

Delaware Hayes 2015 quick preview

Delaware Hayes Pacers

2014 record: 3-7 (2-5)

A young Delaware Hayes team set out on the 2014 season with unknown expectations. After losing basically their entire offensive backfield from the 2013 season, the Pacers kicked off their season with a bang, defeating Buckeye Valley, 30-6.

However, after defeating the Barons in the opening game, Delaware Hayes stumbled to six straight losses, three of which were decided by one possession.

After dropping a Thursday night game to Marysville (20-13), Hayes traveled to Westland and came up just short, losing to the Cougars, 28-21. Consecutive losses to Kilbourne, Big Walnut and New Albany ensued before the Pacers traveled just south to take on Olentangy Orange.

Ethan Tucky ran for 99 yards and a touchdown against the Pioneers, but the passing attack of Orange was too much, too late as they defeated Hayes, 13-10 to drop the Pacers’ record to 1-6.

Despite losing their previous six games, Hayes rebounded to send their seniors out in style, winning their final two home games on Homecoming and Senior Night to improve their record to 3-6.

Tucky returns for a Hayes team in 2015 that will look to right the ship and win those close games this fall. Tucky will be joined by Sean Gliebe to form a rushing attack that combined for 1,216 yards and 11 touchdowns a season ago.

Also returning for the Pacers will be rising junior, quarterback Cullen Moore.

In his first season as starting quarterback, Moore threw for 563 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 256 yards and another score. Tucky and Gliebe combined as his favorite targets but Moore will also return the services of wide receiver Noah Watts and 6-foot-3 wide out Derrick Buford.

The defensive side of the ball may be a different story for Hayes as they graduated six of their top eight tacklers from 2014. Tucky also returns as the top defensive player, having accumulated 61 total tackles, 11.5 for loss and six sacks from his linebacker position.

Tucky has committed to play linebacker for Boston College following his senior season.

Watts will also have an increased role on both sides of the ball as he comes back to anchor a secondary that allowed  1,443 yards through the air a season ago.

Possibly one of the bigger holes across the board may be the loss of Joseph Sanfilipo, who handled all of the kicking duties for the Pacers in 2014. Sanfilipo finished 6-of-10 on field goals, 20-of-21 on extra points while averaging 56.1 yards per kickoff including 23 touchbacks. He also punted the ball 48 times for an average of 35.6 yards and pinned opponent’s offenses inside the 20-yard line 11 times.

Coach Mike Golden will have had an added year of teaching his young team and aspirations for a solid 2015 campaign should be in order. Time will tell if their junior quarterback can lead them to a record over .500 % for the first time since 2009.

Central Crossing 2015 quick preview

Central Crossing Quick Preview

Central Crossing Comets

2014 record: 7-4 (5-2)

In 2014, the Central Crossing Comets arguably had the biggest surprise story throughout the entire Ohio Capital Conference.

On the heels of a 2013 season in which they finished 2-8, the Comets were not high on any preseason rankings or projections. Despite only winning two games the previous season, Central Crossing finished the regular season with a 7-3 record, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Comets were paced by sophomore, dual-threat quarterback Deric Williamson, who ran for a team-high 632 yards, throwing for 1,383 yards and 13 touchdowns.

During the impressive, and arguably most notable season to date, Central Crossing saw extreme highs and some defeating lows. The Comets cruised past Mount Vernon in the opening game of the season, 58-27, before faltering in week two, losing to Beechcroft, 26-7.

Central Crossing would rebound and handle Linden-McKinley, 44-8 before again falling, this time to Olentangy Liberty, 30-8.

A 2-2 Comets team set up for a crucial OCC game against perennial powerhouse, Hilliard Davidson. In what would go down as one of the more exciting games from the entire 2014 season for both teams, Central Crossing rallied to force overtime against the Wildcats.

In overtime, the Comets shut down Purdue commit, Davidson’s Markus Bailey short on a two-point conversion attempt, to defeat the Wildcats, 21-20.

Central Crossing would win four of the final five games, including a 35-21 victory over Upper Arlington, before qualifying for their inaugural postseason trip.

For the Comets however, their first ever playoff game pitted them against one of Ohio’s all-time powerhouses, St. Xavier. The Bombers were Division I Champions in both 2005 and 2007 while they had also won six regional championships and 23 league titles.

St. Xavier displayed their playoff prominence against the Comets, defeating them 50-13, ending Central Crossing’s season on a sour note. However, there are many reasons the future looks bright for head coach Chris Barr’s team.

Take for instance, his dual-threat quarterback from a successful 2014 season – Williamson – will only be a junior when the team takes the field this fall. The team’s top returning rusher besides Williamson also returns as Colter Bass will head into his senior season with the Comets.

Williamson will also return his top three receiving targets from 2014 as Noah Stephens, Christian Miranda and Koran Montague will be back for their senior seasons.

On defense, the Comets bring back their top three tacklers from a season ago. Linebacker Robbie Fusner, who led the team in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss, returns for his senior season. Kameron Teacher and Blake Luebben who finished 2-3 on the team in tackles respectively also return as seniors.

Central Crossing will look to build off perhaps their best season a year prior, as they open the 2015 season against Pickerington North, on Thursday, August 27 at 7:30.
